Sayap sisi atas berwarna coklat tua. Pada sayap depan terdapat 2 (dua) bercak hitam, bercak bagian atas lebih kecil dari bercak dibagian bawahnya. Disekitar bercak hitam tersebut terdapat noda coklat muda dan dibagian tengahnya terdapat bintik putih kecil. Sayap belakang berwarna lebih gelap dan pada sayap ini terdapat 1 (satu) bintik putih kecil. Tepi sayap bersudut dan bergelombang. Sisi bawah sayap berwarna coklat muda. Sayap depan memiliki pola yang sama dengan sayap sisi atas, tetapi dibagian atas bercak hitan terdapat 3 (tiga) bintik kecil. Sayap belakang memiliki 7 (tujuh) bintik kuning dan putih dengan besar yang berbeda disepanjang tepi sayap. Kepala, dada dan perut berwarna coklat dorsal berwarna coklat muda. Bentangan sayap ± 7 cm.

This moth is a female Ambulyx clavata.

Diagnose :
The general lack of lines across the wings and the spot on the leading edge of the wing near the
base are diagnostic. The female on our website is a little too yellow.
Most female Ambulyx have a deeper, more purplish colour than the males that sometimes does not last as the specimen gets older.

Diagnosis. The mottled grey-green forewings with the round, dark green subbasal patch are diagnostic.

Geographical range. N. India to Bismarck Is.

Habitat preference. The species is less frequent than lineosa but has been taken in the same range of localities.

Biology. The larva was described by Dupont & Roepke (1941). The young larva is green with pale yellow dots and a pair of ocelli on A1. The mature larva is greyish brown speckled dark brown. White lines run from the ocelli to the head. The short horn is downcurved, dark brown, granulated with white tubercles.

The host-plant recorded was Tetrastigma (Vitidaceae).

This is very hard for us to identify, due the minimal information. Very hard to find photo from internet and catalog. Finally we found the pattern from Yukata web site (A Check List of Butterflies in Indo-China, Chiefly from THAILAND, LAOS & VIETNAM), so our euthalia from rejang land namely as Euthalia aconthea garuda, and I think this is the first record in photo from Rejang land nature, and must add to in Sumatra Butterfly check list.

Adult

Upperside dark olive-brown. FW male dark brown at the base with 3 U- shaped marginal bands and 2 groups of white spots. HW with pinkish tinge at the anterior border, 4 black spots at the base and a submarginal row of black spots. Female olive brown, similar to male but with larger white markings and more rounded HW. Underside grayish brown with grey markings at the apex and base, marked as above, black spots along the wing margins and blackish rings at the base. Wingspan 55-80mm.

The most widely distributed species of Euthalia in South India, more in the forests. As mango, its principal host plant is cultivated everywhere, it is now very common even in cities and crowded markets, on rotten vegetables and fruits, toddy, plant sap and damp patches. Highly territorial in habit, it often returns to the same spot again and again.

Larva

Green with red spotted head, pale dorsal line dotted with blue and white spots and 10 pairs of long, laterally projecting, delicate branched spines. While resting on leaves, it positions its body along the midrib and lateral spines parallel to the leaf veins, thus mimicking the leaf perfectly.

Feeds on mango, cashewnut, white bryony, rose, mulberry, loranthus, etc.

Distribution

India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, Malaysia, Indonesia (Rejang Land, Sumatra) and the Sundaland.

Ambulyx (formerly Oxyambulyx) canescens is considered a forest pest because its larvae feed on the leaves of young Dryobalanops lanceolata, a timber tree. This hawkmoth is found in Indochina, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and the Philippines.

Diagnosis. Both this and the next species differ from Bornean congeners in having a pair of ocellate marks subapically on the abdomen rather than a narrow dorsal line, more than two subbasal patches on the forewing, definite discal spots, and hindwings concolorous with the forewing. A. canescens is a more greyish species with stronger subbasal markings on the forewing and a stronger green edging to the thorax; there are distinctive pale patches on the hindwing.

Geographical range. S.E. Asia, Sundaland; Philippines. Sumatra.

Habitat preference. Harman (1981) recorded the species generally in Brunei. On the Kinabalu and Mulu surveys it was only taken above 1500m, the highest record being from 2600m. Now we recorded at May 2009 at Curup town, rejang land, sumatra, Indonesia.

Biology. The species has been reared from Shorea lepidota (Dipterocarpaceae) at FRIM (Forest Research Institute of Malaysia). And now we found at Curup town, Rejang Land, Sumatra, Indonesia.

Diagnosis. The broad irregular yellow band of the hindwing, the yellow-flanked, green abdomen and the green costal zone of the forewing interacting irregularly with the pale postmedial band distinguish this species.

Geographical range. Japan, Indo-Australian tropics to New Caledonia; introduced to Hawaii.

Habitat preference. T. nessus is taken frequently with light traps at all altitudes from the lowlands to 2600m.

Biology. The mature larva is variable, usually green or yellowish brown (Bell & Scott, 1937; Dupont & Roepke, 1941), with white dorsolateral and (green form only) dorsal lines, Bell & Scott illustrate the brown form as dorsally more yellowish brown. The ocellus on A1 is obliquely oval, white, edged blue to the interior; a much smaller ocellus occurs within the dorsolateral stripe on A2. All abdominal segments in this brown form have triangular blue patches to the dorsal side of the dorsolateral stripe. Diagnosis. See Callidula sumatrensis Pagenstecher. The male genitalia have the valve in two longitudinal, slightly arcuate components as illustrated. There are two pairs of scent pencils. The female lacks a signum in the bursa.

Geographical range. Sundaland; Burma, Thailand (ssp. minor Moore).

Habitat preference. The species appears to be more frequent in lowland forest, though most material seen is without altitude data from G. Kinabalu (Waterstradt).

The Atlas moth is a large moth in the family Saturniidae. It is found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia. Atlas moths are the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area (upwards of c. 400 square cm or 65 square inches). Their wingspan is amongst the largest, from 25-30 cm (10-12 inches). Females are appreciably larger and heavier than the male. Atlas moths are said to be named after either the Titan of Greek mythology, or their map-like wing patterns. In Hong Kong, the Cantonese name translates as "snake's head moth", referring to apical extension of the forewing, which bears a passing resemblance to a snake's head.

Atlas moths are predominantly tawny to maroon in color with roughly triangular eyespots on both fore and hindwings. Patterns and coloration vary among the many described subspecies. Male Atlas moths are distinguished from females by their smaller size, more tapered wings, and larger, bushier antennae. Neither sex possess fully-formed mouthparts and therefore do not feed; they survive entirely on larval fat reserves throughout their 1-2 week adult life.

Females are sexually passive, releasing powerful pheromones which males detect and home in on with the help of chemoreceptors located on their large feathery antennae. Males may thus be attracted from several kilometers downwind. Atlas moths are unsteady fliers and the female does not stray far from the location of her discarded chrysalis: she seeks a perch where the air currents will best carry her pheromones.

Once mated, the female lays a number of spherical eggs 2.5 mm in diameter on the undersides of leaves. Dusty-green caterpillars hatch after about two weeks and feed voraciously on the foliage of certain citrus and other trees. The caterpillars are adorned with fleshy spines along their backs which are covered in a waxy white substance. After reaching a length of about 115 mm (4.5 inches), the caterpillars pupate, emerging as adults after approximately four weeks. . -- From Wikipedia

Adult upperside dark golden brown with semi- transparent spots; spots white in female and yellow in male. FW with 3 small, sub-apical spots ( the middle one the smallest), 4 disco-cellular spots ( the cellular spot larger and excavated, sometimes divided into 2 ), 2 round spots below them and brownish indistinct marks and outer marginal band. HW with a cellular brown spot, a discal curved band and marginal band. Underside similar but duller. Wingspan 40-46mm.

An inhabitant of moist, cool, dense jungles in the hills up to 2300m. visits flowers, bird droppings frequently and water rarely. Fond of basking in the sun on the upper surface of leaves close to the ground. With extremely rapid flight, it makes long lasting aerial sorties occasionally in shady clearings.

Larva

Greenish brown with black head. Body spindle-like with a segment with 8 long simple hairs besides a few branched hairs.

The Nigger

The Nigger is a common butterfly in Rejang Land, Sumatra and Singapore and can be found on the fringes of the nature reserves and in areas where there are grassy patches of land. It is a butterfly that can be seen flying even early in the morning on overcast days, and late into the evening.

The Nigger is dark brown and unmarked on the upperside, whilst it has two large ocelli on the underside of the forewing and three more ocelli on the underside of the hindwing. There is a distinct white stripe extending across both wings on the underside.

The caterpillar is believed to feed on grasses, particularly, Lallang.

Common Three Ring

This Cinderella of butterflies almost rivals the Euremas in terms of abundance, and the species can almost always be encountered in most of the forest transects in Singapore. Its caterpillar is believed to feed on grasses and indeed it is always to be found in the vicinity of open grassy patches.

The species is greyish brown on the upperside with a large sub-apical ocellus on the forewings. The undersurfaces are a pale buff brown, with fine dark striations. The hindwing has three yellow-ringed black ocelli. Common Three Ring

The butterfly has a feeble flight and is usually found close to the ground. It often stops with its wings half open to bask in sunlit spots.

This form, with the white patch on the hindwing, is less often seen than the typical and more common form where the hindwings don't have this patch.

The Malayan Eggfly might pass as a mimic of a species of Euploea "Crows". This species is subject to considerable variation and occurs in two forms in rejang land - f. anomala and f. nivas which has a diffused white post discal bands on the hindwings (pictured here).

Ocassionally, examples of f. anomala occurs which has a prominent blue gloss on the forewings above. The species frequents lowland forests and is relatively common in Singapore. Sometimes, two or three butterflies are seen flying together. The butterfly appears to be territorial and individuals are seen returning to its favorite perch time and again despite being disturbed. They also "chase" away other butterflies who fly within range of their territory.

This species showing a unique behaviour of "guarding" their eggs. The female remains standing over their eggs even until the larvae dispersed to other leaves, and apparently may die in this position (Johnston et al., 1981). This remarkable behaviour is not recorded in others butterfly except Hypolimnas antilope (Schreiner and Nafus, 1991).

Many species butterfly in Rejang Land. With make us proud we have many kind species from Papilio genus. This one taken from rejang land, name Papilio Memnon, but I wonder this Papilio memnon heronus or Papilio memnon Agenor. Or may be one of you give me correctly information?

For today, the Papilio butterfly is rarely following harmfull tropical forest in Sumatra Island include in Rejang. That very terrible pal :(. It happen in many years in my country? What can we should do?

The mimetic butterfly Papilio Memnon, aka The Great Mormon, is known for having a variation of characteristics. there is only one male form but the female comes in many forms, even having male characteristics. a "bisexual" one was bred recently. it probably resembles this one, which is an aberrant male cuz it has the white and red spots only known to be on females. it also looks like it has a bigger abdomen, another trait for females.

Description: The Common Sailor is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in South Asia and Southeast Asia. This butterfly has wingspan of 50-60 mm. Upper side black with white markings. Fore wings with white streaks, triangular spot and a series of spots. Hind wings with a basal broad white band and an outer series of squarish white spots. Underside golden brown with white markings as above, but sharply edged with black margin.
It has a characteristic stiff gliding flight achieved by short and shallow wing beats just above the horizontal.

Rare Painted Jezebel Itohi was found in Rejang Land as you see at photo below. The different beautifull pattern we found at five red spot with black background at lower wing. Its make very happy to find this rarest species exist in Rejang Land. I identified this species base on Forms and abberations of Delias hyparete, and the form match only for Delias Hyparete sub species Itohi.

Delias Hyparete Itohi first identify by Nakano 1993 and it discovere at Simeulue Island, Aceh Province, Indonesia. So that why its really surprise when we find the same pattern wing of butterfly as same as with the subspecies from Simeulue Island. If this subspecies endemik in Simeulue Island and thats photo above is not Delias Hyparete Itohi, so must be that butterfly at photo above to be new sub species Delias Hyparete from rejang land. If any body expert about butterfly please give us comment :).

With this photo we serve that Delias Hyparete Itohi range habitat present at Rejang land, especially Rejang Lebong regency, Bengkulu Province. Not only at Simeulue Island.

The Purple Bush Brown is rather local in distribution and is rarer than the other Mycalesis species in Singapore, but we found this species in Rejang Land. One of the distinguishing features of this species of Mycalesis is that the prominently yellow-ringed ocelli (eye-spots) are rather uniform in size and are almost all present on both the fore- and hindwings below. The rather broad white post-discal band on the underside is faintly violet-washed.

The Purple Bush Brown is a forest species and is most often encountered in the Chestnut area in the forest fringes of the western banks of Upper Peirce Reservoir. It is usually found singly and flies low amongst the grasses and undergrowth in shaded localities.

The Amathusia genus comprise a number of similar looking butterflies which are rather difficult to identify. However, in Singapore, only one - The Palm King, is known to exist. All the species are similarly marked with the upper surface some shade of brown, whilst the undersurface is patterned with broad bands of reddish or cinnamon brown and narrower whitish bands. The hindwing has large submarginal ocelli.
The Palm King is crepuscular in habits and often enters lighted houses. It feeds on the coconut palm.

Danaid Eggfly Fly Butterfly

The Danaid Eggfly is an excellent example of sexual diamorphism. The male is black with white oval spots. The female is a mimic of the unpalatable Plain Tiger in appearance and behavior. It can be distinguished from the Plain Tiger by the single black spot on its hind wing as opposed to three or four spots on the Plain Tiger and by comparing the pattern of their wing margins.

Adult

Male upperside black with dark iridescent blue or violet ringed white, oval discal patch on both wings. FW with a small oval spot in the apex. Underside, oval spots prominent which in the HW occupy the entire discal area and a prominent black costal spot. Female upperside orange or orange brown, mimics the plain tiger, danaus chrysippus. FW with white-spotted, black apex and costa. HW with a prominent black costal spot and more wavy margin. Underside FW as above. HW light orange with 3 black spots and a row of small submarginal white spots. Wingspan 70-85mm.

An inhabitant of open country with moderate rainfall, it is a strong and fast flier. Male more common than female, which is an excellent mimic of the plain tiger, D. chrysippus chrysippus from which it can be differentiated by the more wavy HW margins and one prominent costal spot on the upperside as against 3 or 4 spots in the plain tiger. Male highly territorial, often found basking in the sun by resting on bushes or ground with continuous slow movement of wings to the sides. Visits flowers of Lantana, Common Zinnia, Ceylon Carissa, Sunflower, Aztec Marigold, Bachelor’s button , Golden Groundsel, Vipersbugloss, etc. also known as the common eggfly and the Diadem.

Larva

Purple brown thickest in the middle, covered with minute white spots. Head with 2 small horns and body with 9 rows of spines.

Feeds on common purslane, country mallow, white barleria, bluebell barleria, asystasia gangetica, justicia betonica, portulaca tuberosa, etc.

Description

The fore wings are black. At the outer edge there is a chain of yellow spots. Next to the body there are four chains of little yellow spots. There are some other yellow spots at the rest of wing. The underside of Papilio demoleus is very similar to the upside. Next to the body there are four yellow lines.

The hind wings of Papilio demoleus are black. The edge is wavy. Next to the body the wing is spotted by yellow scales. The wing is dominated by a broad, yellow band. This band contains a big eye. At the outer edge there are five yellow spots. At the inner edge there is a red eye-spot. The underside is similar to the upside. But all yellow marks are bigger than the marks on the upside. Next to the body there is a yellow area with black lines. In the middle of the wing there are blue and orange spots.

The body is black, but the underside is yellow.

In rejang land I think more than a thousand species butterfly still exist. Rejang people call butterfly as mamai at lebong regency and libat at kepahiang regency.

The Great Mormon is an interesting butterfly in that it has many different female forms. This large "Swallowtail" feeds on Citrus, in particular, the Pomelo. It is fairly common in Rejang Land, and can usually be found along jungle paths and feeding on flowering plants.

The male upperside is black dusted with blue. On the underside, the hindwing has a red tornal patch and both wing bases are red.

Race bolina

The Great Eggfly is a black-bodied butterfly with a wingspan of about 7–8½ cm. The species has a high degree of sexual dimorphism. The female is mimetic with multiple morphs.

Male

The upper side of the wings are jet black, offset with three pairs of white spots – two on the forewing and one on the hind. These white spots are surrounded by purple iridescence. In addition, the upper side of the hind wing bears a series of small white dots.

Female

The upper side of the wings of the female is a brownish black and does not have any spots like those of the male. The edges bear white markings which are similar to those of the Common Indian Crow.

Distribution

Great Eggflies are found in Madagascar in the west, through to South and Southeast Asia, South Pacific islands (French Polynesia, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu) and occurs in parts of Australia, Japan and New Zealand.

Habitat

The Great Eggfly is a fairly common butterfly found in lightly wooded country, deciduous forests, thick and moist scrub and the greener parts of human habitation.

Mimicry

To the west the female is monomorphic, mimicking species of the oriental and Australasian danaid genus Euploea. Eastwards H. bolina is frequently polymorphic and most forms are then non-mimetic. In areas where it resembles Euploea the butterfly has usually been designated a Batesian mimic.

Life cycle and ecology

Great Eggflies are known for maternal care, with the females guarding leaves where eggs have been laid. Males are also very territorial. The female hovers over a plant to check for ants which will eat her eggs. After selecting a plant which has no ants on it, she lays at least one but often two to five eggs on the undersides of the leaves.

Host plants

Race bolina breeds on Fleuria interrupta, Sida rhombifolia, Elatostemma cuneatum, Portulaca oleracea, Laportea interrupta, Triumfetta pentandra, and Asystasia species.

Other hosts include Elatostema cuneatum, Fleurya interrupta,Pseuderanthemum variabile and Synedrella nodiflora.

Eggs
The eggs are a pale, glassy green with longitudinal ridges except on the top.

Caterpillar

After about four days the eggs hatch. The caterpillars immediately disperse. They are black with an orange head. The last segment is also orange. The head bears a pair of long branched black horns. The body surface is also covered with long, branched, orangish black spines. These spines look whitish and transparent immediately after moulting, but soon become the usual orange. In later instars the spiracles are surrounded by thin, dirty orange rings. Infection by Wolbachia bacteria is known to exclusively kill male specimens.

Pupa

The pupa is suspended by just one point. It is brown with a grey tinge on the wings. The abdominal segments have distinct tubercles. The surface of the pupa is rough. The butterfly emerges after seven to eight days as pupae (female development is always a bit longer).

Recent evolutionary changes

On the Samoan islands of Upolu and Savaii, a parasite (probably Wolbachia) had been killing the male members of Hypolimnas bolina. The problem was so severe that by the year 2001, males made up only 1% of the population. However, in 2007, it was reported that within a span of just 10 generations (less than a year), the males had evolved to develop immunity to the parasite, and the male population increased to nearly 40%.
